Now that "Liberty" has become an empty slogan, which motto should replace it?

Now that Liberty is an obsolete concept, suggest a new motto for U.S. coinage:

  • "Liberty" is still an appropriate motto. Our gov't is truly dedicated to preserving our liberties.

V as in vendetta :)

What do I get?

Exactly.

When I saw that film, I felt so much relief that at least <b>someone</b> out there is trying to warn the masses of what is to come. <i>I</i> didn't need the film's message for myself- but <i>they</i>, the masses, require it now more than ever.

You come off as SO twentysomething when you post this shit.

As recently as..... well as recently as me being YOUR age, bookmakers would get eight fucking years for taking bets on NFL games. Serious shit. You act as if gambling became illegal yesterday. Or that drugs were lawful until Bush. As if no one is still sitting in Federal prison on an intent to distribute rap prosecuted by Reno......

Technical question:

Isn't it possible to route my website request through some kind of anonymus server or a server in a country where gambling is legal, so the US would never know I visited the site???

I think the way how hackers use the web, it can be done.

I just read an article about Pamela Anderson, who just started her poker website. Is her business screwed already??

Drug laws suck....and they have since the 20's.

Would you disagree if you were popped buying a lid somewhere in Lauderdale to satisfy your jones? I wouldn't think so.

It's a government sanctioned black market...pure and simple. Only the most partisan pukes try to pretend it's the other guys fault.

This bill has basically destroyed online poker for both U.S.-based and non-U.S. based gamblers. The reason is that online poker was interesting because of the high number of fish. These people were recreational players who typically played just to have some fun. A large percentage of these type of players were based in the United States. Now, since it is so difficult just to play, most of the fish will simply go on to something else for fun. The poker sites will become increasingly difficult as the only players left are professional and semi-professional level players. It is really a mess. Also, the law gives the legal authority to block any websites for "security" reasons. This can be extended to include other websites, not just gambling sites. Welcome to the New World Order.

Quote from acronym:

Thats a lot of business they just shut down, is there any logical reason for it?

Of course. The same reason as always.
From 1984:

'You understand well enough ~how~ the party maintains
itself in power. Now tell me ~why~ we cling to power. What
is our motive? Why should we want power? Go on, speak,' he
added as Winston remained silent.
[...]
Nevertheless Winston did not speak for another moment or
two.
[...]
'You are ruling over us for our own good,' he said
feebly. 'You believe that human beings are not fit to govern
themselves, and therefore -

He started and almost cried out. A pang of pain had shot
through his body. O'Brien had pushed the lever of the dial
up to thirty-five.

'That was stupid, Winston, stupid!' he said. 'You should
know better than to say a thing like that.'

He pulled the lever back and continued:

'Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is
this. <b>The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We
are not interested in the good of others; we are interested
solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or
happiness: only power, pure power.</b>
What pure power means you
will understand presently. We are different from the
oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing.
All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were
cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian
Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they
never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They
pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized
power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just
round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings
would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that
no one seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it.
Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a
dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes
the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. <b>The
object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture
is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin
to understand me?'</b>
