Not 97% but .3% of Climatologists agree.

here is a real thing that happens in our atmosphere...
greenhouse gases also cool.

Here is a real experiment / observation in our atmosphere...

Mlynczak is the associate principal investigator for the SABER instrument onboard NASA’s TIMED satellite. SABER monitors infrared emissions from Earth’s upper atmosphere, in particular from carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO), two substances that play a key role in the energy balance of air hundreds of km above our planet’s surface.
“Carbon dioxide and nitric oxide are natural thermostats,” explains James Russell of Hampton University, SABER’s principal investigator. “When the upper atmosphere (or ‘thermosphere’) heats up, these molecules try as hard as they can to shed that heat back into space.”
That’s what happened on March 8th when a coronal mass ejection (CME) propelled in our direction by an X5-class solar flare hit Earth’s magnetic field. (On the “Richter Scale of Solar Flares,” X-class flares are the most powerful kind.) Energetic particles rained down on the upper atmosphere, depositing their energy where they hit. The action produced spectacular auroras around the poles and significant1 upper atmospheric heating all around the globe.
“The thermosphere lit up like a Christmas tree,” says Russell. “It began to glow intensely at infrared wavelengths as the thermostat effect kicked in.”
For the three day period, March 8th through 10th, the thermosphere absorbed 26 billion kWh of energy. Infrared radiation from CO2 and NO, the two most efficient coolants in the thermosphere, re-radiated 95% of that total back into space.

It, and other similar experiments prove CO2 absorbs and then re-radiates infra-red heat radiation. Radiation that would otherwise pass through the air.

This is a key concept.

I assume that you understand it? Because it's real important.

Let's take this one small simple step at time. We have Republicans present.

So. Do you agree that CO2 molecules have this physical property?

Again. I can't stress enough. This is essential climate science 101 that must be understood before we go further.

jerm, gwb, fulcrum? Understand?

FAIL!

What is a fail? Your ability to understand this basic ironclad science?

It, and other similar experiments prove CO2 absorbs and then re-radiates infra-red heat radiation. Radiation that would otherwise pass through the air.

The class cannot move on until all the Republicans here understand this.

This may take some time.

jerm, please help out your particularly slow friends gwb and fulcrum with this. I know you understand this basic science.

You do right?

I could post the video again it you want.

"SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!"

That was the demand of Jerry Maguire and the demand of your humble correspondent is SHOW ME THE DATA!!! I make this request because Nick Madigan of the New York Times wrote an article projecting heavy ocean flooding of South Florida in this century based on no solid evidence.

Your grasp of real science and factual reality.

So then you don't think it is true that CO2 absorbs and then re-radiates infra-red heat radiation. Radiation that would otherwise pass through the air.

Again, this is key.

If you are having problems with this perhaps I can help.

Jem? Can you help him and gwb understand this? You would be doing me a big favor.

No Sale!

Well which is it? You gonna help or are they gonna help?

after reading a ton of this stuff... I find the guy at wattsupwiththat to be pretty credible on this issue.

he states that technically co2 is a greenhouse gas and could cause some warming... but that it is such a small component of ghg it itself would only be responsible for a tiny fraction of any warming. man mad co2 would obviously be even lower.

therefore the next thing you have to wonder is... well is there a multiplier effect...

answer... there could be but...
studies are coming out right now showing some aerosols cause cooling... and the burning of fossil fuels creates aerosols.

We also see that adding clouds may cause cooling.

So frankly... just because co2 may cause a little warming in a jar does not mean adding more of it to our atmosphere causes more warming.

And if I were to bet... I would bet... adding ghc in the beginning of the cycle causes warming but as the cycle progresses more ghcs cause cooling. If it worked any other way it would be surprising... this system has been cycling for a long time. if it did not work that way... we probably would have burned up by now.

Maybe I did not make myself clear. Let me try again.

CO2 absorbs and then re-radiates infra-red heat radiation. Radiation that would otherwise pass through the air.

There is no question about this. None. It's as solid a science as science gets.

If you can't accept this there is no hope you will be able to grasp anything more complicated.

Here, look at this video. This kid knows his stuff. Maybe he can help Republicans understand.

All right. Maybe Republicans are offended by having to listen to ten year old kids tell them stuff.

So here. Check it out. It's pretty cool. Really.
