North Carolina is No. 1 when it comes to being a state for companies to do business, says CNBC in a new report out early Wednesday.

It’s the first time the state has taken the top spot in the annual report that considers “all 50 states on 88 metrics in 10 broad categories of competitiveness.”

North Carolina finished second a year ago and regularly places near the top of other such state ranking reports.

In the report, CNBC says the ability of the state’s political leaders “to put partisanship aside” have as a result built what it considers “the nation’s strongest economy.”

“What made the difference this year? For one thing, state leaders keep managing to put aside their very deep political divisions to boost business and the economy,” CNBC reported.

CNBC ranked North Carolina No. 1 in the economy category, fifth for technology and innovation, 12th for workforce, 17th for infrastructure, 26th for cost of doing business, and 28th for health and inclusion.

The state of Washington placed second followed by Virginia, Colorado and Texas.

That;s fine. If North Carolina is having a good day and has some things to be proud, that is not a problem. Last year, U.S. News and World Report voted Portland, Maine as the best city in America to live in.

Ever hoping to make Florida look bad, the NPC just can't be content with posting positivity for NC, he's got to throw down the gauntlet on Florida and have a pop shot, all because DeSantis made him look like a clown during COVID (and continues to do so). So, allow me to dig into the article posting. First, some of the negative comments not shared about NC:

But North Carolina remains one of just five states with no law protecting nondisabled residents from discrimination, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The state also lags in two other important Life, Health and Inclusion metrics: per capita public health spending and hospital resources. Both are among the many areas where North Carolina’s explosive growth is straining resources.

How CNBC does the economic ranking (which is the one the NPC above is crowing over) is using the following criteria:

Unfortunately, some of these like "Business Friendly" are subjective and have a good deal of anecdotal info that make them up. Others, like "cost of living" use aggregates and weighting that isn't exactly scientific. This isn't to say that NC isn't a great state to operate it - it is. We have several locations in NC and it is very business friendly. But comparing states based on anecdotal info just to trumpet that "you're better than another state you hate" well, its not exactly empirical.

Business Friendly "calcs":

Business Friendliness (200 points – 8%)

Companies follow the path of least resistance. That includes a legal and regulatory framework that does not overburden business. We measure each state’s lawsuit and liability climates, regulatory regimes covering areas such as trade and labor, as well as overall bureaucracy. We also consider how hospitable states are toward emerging industries including cryptocurrency and cannabis.​

Cost of Living (50 points – 2%)

With inflation persisting at historic levels, companies and workers are seeking states where prices are stable and daily living is affordable. The cost of living helps drive the cost of doing business. From housing to food and energy, wages go further when the cost of living is low. We measure the states based on an index of costs for basic items.​

What items? Doesn't say. Someone picked a list, and then went with an "average". How were cities weighted?

So Florida outranks NC in Workforce and Infrastructure categories (again, I'm only doing the comparison because the NPC began the comparison). But loses big to "Life Health & Inclusion", because it isn't "woke enough". That's fine for us in Florida, we like it that way. Florida comes close in "economy" which, if you consider the stark differences is how the two states operated during COVID, is astounding and further illustrates that lockdowns and not doing lockdowns didn't matter one iota. It also loses big in "Business Friendliness", but the report doesn't indicate how much of this is due to thinks like crypto and cannibas, and how much is actually related to regulations.

That's the problem with these comparisons - they're only from the point of the person doing the comparison. And the mainstream media wasn't about to give DeSantis any more momentum than he already has.

GWB should have touted the success of NC without taking a pot shot through jealousy. It would have left him in a better light, but that's not the way a small man operates.
