Hi, Does anyone know if/how a non-US citizen and non-resident can open a bank account in the US?
I have US$ expenses in the US and transferring from IB to home and back to the US is not very cost effective.
Thanks.

Check out icici bank. The process for me has been very simple. You can set up an account in your home currency then have a second account setup in USD and it is easy to transfer back and forth.
They also give me a 4.25% on cash in the US account. Best and easiest I've come across.
Hope that helps.

Just an update if anyone is interested. I ended up opening a bank account with Citibank International Personal Banking in Singapore. Transferring money from IB resulted in no fees on either side. They also provide a USD credit card and the account is multi-currency so I can keep SGD in there as well. The only disadvantage I can see is transferring USD out of the account to the US will incurr Int'l transfer fees.
Cheers.

Is this treated like a USD account in a foreign bank, or an account in a US bank? I mean can you do ACH transfer from another US bank? It appears it is just a USD account in a foreign, since you pay international wire fees.

But I'm sure you need to be a singapure resident to open this.
