Reid apologizes for 'no Negro dialect' comment

WASHINGTON – The top Democrat in the U.S. Senate apologized on Saturday for comments he made about Barack Obama's race during the 2008 presidential bid and are quoted in a yet-to-be-released book about the campaign.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada described in private then-Sen. Barack Obama as "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." Obama is the nation's first African-American president.

Teddy's anger

One of the enduring mysteries of the 2008 campaign was what got Ted Kennedy so mad at Bill Clinton. The former president's entreaties, at some point, backfired, and the explanation has never quite emerged.

I've finally gotten my hands on a copy of Game Change, in which Heliemann and Halperin report:

As Hillary bungled Caroline, Bill’s handling of Ted was even worse. The day after Iowa, he phoned Kennedy and pressed for an endorsement, making the case for his wife. But Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.

It's always hard to tell what somebody is going to call racist.. that coffee comment doesn't seem racist, just historical.. that is the reason that the only people I talk to in other races are the pretty girls.

You probably wont hear anything from Gayfly1 about this onehe is still way to busy trying to convince people that saying "you lie" is racist.

Is that comment really racists? It may be insensitive or politically incorrect, but probably not racist. It is more like saying a candidate from a Southern state doesn't speak with a Southern accent, unless they want to talk to a local crowd. Senator Reid was actually trying to extol the virtues of Obama as a candidate, rather than putting Obama down.

The fact that he is apologizing clearly means he meant it as an insult. Otherwise his reaction would have been what you are imagining.

Imagine if Sarah Palin had said the exact same thing. Would you be defending her?

As was already stated above, Joe Wilson was more or less called a racist for saying "you lie".

So based on the democratcs logic with Wilson, Harry Reid must be running the KKK with his remarks.
 
It's a double standard in this country when a Senate leader praises a member for a lifetime of service with a remark that was taken askew is forced out while another Senate leader with a blatant racist remark can only be removed by the voters in his state. F'n double standard!

It's evident that the guy's team is losing, right-and Australians don't "get" the love of fried chicken is in any way racist.
Ie, it's actually very likely a sheer coincidence the add just happened to be for fried chicken.
