Can somebody tell me if you can run the ninjatrader simulator and still use tws in the standard way for real trading at the same time? I want to test some strategies while still trading for real.

Works with Futures-Trader...

Yes.
 
You can run as many instances of NT as you want. If you are not a subscriber, running NT in simulation will not have any affect on TWS ability to trade live. I personally run two instances of NT over my home network. One instance runs on the same PC TWS is installed and is used for my discretionary trading. The other instance runs on another PC and is running in simulation and is set up to run Automated Trading with NeoTicker. I am basically forward testing a system that I am developing.

This set up works great.
