That would make him the first openly gay ambassador to the UN, so all the lefties will embrace him and celebrate that, right? Just as they did with Nikki because she is a woman?

I am not 100% sure he would need confirmation anyway. Confirmation seems to be required for senior principal officers to generically serve in senior positions but not limited to any position. So if you have already been approved as ambassador or similar position then you can just be re-assigned without taking your obligatory beating a/k/a confirmation hearing. Not sure. I think that's right though.
