"Screenshots shared online purportedly from NHS staff, show a program demanding $300 (£230) in Bitcoin that looks similar to ransomware known as WannaCryptor or WCry."

That major NSA hacking tools leak a few weeks ago allowed this to happen....

"So NSA had secret backdoor into Windows. Details leaked few weeks ago. Now backdoor being exploited by random criminals. Nightmare" @SamCoatesTimes

Attack is stopped by accident. Somebody bought a domainname, and when this domain became activ the virus stopped spreading. For each attack the virus went to check for the domain. As long as the domain was not active it continued to spread. It was a built in stop for the hacker.
