NFL Owners May Require Players to Stand For National Anthem

Affirmative action sportwriter Mike Wilbon, now on ESPN and formerly the black mascot at the WashPost, opined that Jerry Jones seemed no different from a plantation owner ordering his slaves around. http://www.breitbart.com/video/2017...wner-requiring-players-stand-national-anthem/

The comparison is ludicrous. Slaves were not paid millions a year. No one is forced to play in the NFL. Employers have a legitimate right to dictate how their employees interact with customers.

Obviously Wilbon is aware of all this and is just trying to stake his claim to being the lead affirmative action hire at ESPN. His status is under direct attack by Jemele Hill, an aggressive black female who has already forced the network to tolerate outrageous misbehavior and who marshaled the support of other blacks there to support her.

The network's normal black loudmouth, Stephen A. Smith, has been uncharacteristically reserved. He made the requisite anti-Jones statement, but he perhaps recognizes a losing situation and is trying to back out of it. As he said:

"In the end, what it really, really comes down to is the president has successfully hijacked this issue," Smith said on "First Take," explaining that the original purpose of the anthem protests - highlighting racial inequality and police brutality - has been lost.

"He's turned it into an issue about patriotism and beyond. He's catering to his base in the process," Smith said. "He is the one that's winning because he's turned this into something that the players didn't intend to. So they're going to have to find a different mechanism to make their voices heard, because Trump has won this round."

I am surprised Wilbon was so irrational on this. He normally strikes me as a smart guy.

Does he not realize the players are employees who do have the right to walk away at any time. Its not even a very lopsided power structure... like a president and an intern.

NFL players are mostly educated and mostly very rich... with agents, lawyers and advisors.

If the NFL is a plantation... sign me up for 7 years of servitude.
And, I will send my sons in when they are of age.... with good helmets.

No kidding. Everyone is angry about everything it seems. The football thing was really just the last straw. A lot of people are sick of being lectured and treated with condescending disdain by the grand elites of the media and entertainment world. No one voted for Trump because they thought he was just a darn nice guy.

I like ladies tennis!

I wonder if they will institute the "Star Spangled Banner" before ladies tournaments so we can be entertained to see whether they stand or sit or kneel. Since i just want to relax on my day off, i hope to see the women standing for the anthem.

Trump did not need to weigh in so heavily on this. Mike "Dirty Jobs" Rowe already observed it will come down to the bottom line as fans react on their own or partake in boycotts. That's what it's coming down to.

Seems to me players have hard enough work ahead of them than to take on the weight of political statements. But i'm in favor of some compromise as the flag has been sullied by too many flag bearers (Presidents, generals, deep state, alphabet agencies, police unions) to figure such a prominent (elephant in the room) place in the entertainment schedule for the day.

It really all depends on what the flag means. Since no one actually knows, they should state, over the loudspeaker, what the flag will mean for the next 5 minutes. They should state some meaning that all can agree on before the song begins. That way, those inclined to kneel or sit or stay in the locker room might be incentivised to show loyalty to the commonly accepted meaning.

Oh, and why do i have to think of these solutions? Its not my job. The president should have thought of it and suggested it already.

There is no need for any compromise. They will stand for the Anthem. Or they can go on to their backup careers in the personal training industry.

They will have an opportunity to kneel however. When they are forced to bend the knee to Trump.

Players have a choice. NFL owners have a choice. Fans have a choice.
That is what is great about this country.

They don't have to stand
They don't have to pay
We don't have to watch.
But it does seems like in the end they will bend.
