NFL Owners May Require Players to Stand For National Anthem

Personally, if I were an owner I would give them complete freedom of choice.

And then I would exercise my complete freedom of choice after that.

Yup. Do what you gotta do. And I will do the same.

You might want to start to practice saying "you want fries with that" though.

I wish this were true, but I think most of the players have contracts so it's not easy to just fire them without also paying them.

Good. Either you stand for the anthem in your fancy stadiums built with taxpayer money or you feel the heat from the federal government --- long overdue.

Except for every other company built using tax payers money (via tax breaks, which is what we're talking about here) not having to feel said heat.

It is more than just the tax break- it is also help in the form of state and municipal bonds being used to finance the stadiums then the exemption on federal taxes on the bond income.

I believe players can get suspended for violating league policy, tarnishing league image. Those games missed are without pay if memory serves.

You say that like it matters. Your opinion is meaningless on this, you don't get to dictate your personal beliefs and religion on football players. How any stadiums are financed is irrelevant; none of those deals were predicated on the control of players and their beliefs. The deals were based on financial models, the idea that a local economy benefited from having sports teams at that location. Some may be misguided and a huge waste of money, but that is not the players problem at all.

To me, the entire idea of enforced standing for anthems is fascist in nature and I strongly oppose it. Trump's reaction is no surprise he's become a fascist in nature in his later years.

Actually our entire community got to dictate our beliefs in this. North Carolina is a heavy military community. Nearly every sports bar now has a sign that says "NFL games will not be shown". The NFL revenue is crashing through the floor and the owners now are taking action to put an end to their business issue. Stand or be fired!

If the players want to protest then there are better ways to protest than disrespecting the people who served in our military at every game. They can wear an armband, stickers on their helmets, or colored gloves or socks -- however they need to stop disrespecting our national anthem if they want respect & revenue from the majority of fans. The other issue is that the message the NFL players are trying to get across has been entirely lost in the their method of protest -- the issue has become standing for the national anthem rather than whatever their message may be.

This is a league that barred players from wearing cleats commemorating 9/11. They control every detail of the uniform, down to barring Tim Tebow from wearing eye black decals with Biblical verses. The league and team owners can certainly require their players to stand for the Anthem or suspend them if they refuse. I suspect it will come down to that eventually, because they let the issue mushroom out of control.

We are constantly lectured that this or that traditional symbol or observance is "offensive" in a public space and must come down. When taxpayers shell out hundreds of millions of dollars on sports stadiums for billionaire owners, they too get some sayso on what goes on there. We are saying rather loudly that disrespecting the flag and Anthem is not something we are prepared to tolerate.

The fact that the players are protesting something idiotic doesn't help them either. What exactly is it they want? Less policing in their high crime black areas? The public at large don't buy their implicit argument that racist cops are gunning down innocent blacks willy nilly. Time and again, we see shootings that were exploited by race hustlers turn out to be fully justifiable. The problem in the black community has little to do with racial oppression and a lot to do with a dysfunctional black culture that is actually embraced by many players.
