New Year’s Resolution: Minimum 6-Month “Sabbatical” from ET

Quote from Businessman:

Thunderdog,

How many hours a day do you spend on ET?

(Actually this question might make an interesting poll)
Hard to say. I visit it frequently during the trading day and also with some regularity outside of trading hours when I should either be away from the computer or doing more productive work on it.

Quote from Bearbelly:

You guys cant be serious. Just reading about quitting ET makes me break out in a sweat.

yeah, chance is you might miss the thread that catapults you to the other side.

Say it ain't so dog. Who will I argue with if you leave ?

:p

Sabbaticals are reserved for those who believe in theism.

In my own experience, the less time you spend on here, the better your trading will become. I think many of us post on here out of sheer boredom.

Quote from Thunderdog:

After some introspection, I have concluded that it would be in my best interest to take a sabbatical from ET for a while. I do not have an addictive personality in the normal course, however, I find myself frequenting ET somewhat more than I would care to. After exceeding 3,000 posts it has occurred to me that perhaps I should spend more time elsewhere, both during and after market hours.

There is no question that ET has some value (although you do have to look for it), and I have benefited from it to some extent. However, when I see the rather high proportion of my posts that have nothing to do with trading, it has dawned on me that perhaps I should spend at least that time away from my computer and out in the real world. Further, I won’t deny that I have missed more trading opportunities than I would care to admit while engaging in my diatribes in response to other people’s diatribes in these forums.

And so, I am hoping that cooler heads will prevail in 2007. With this in mind, I am going to endeavor to abstain from ET for a period of no less than 6 months and hopefully a full year. I may occasionally drop in on the software, hardware or broker forums since many of you folks are far more knowledgeable in these areas than I am. However, I will only do so if a specific technical need arises, and I am hoping that such need will not arise.

I will be here until the end of the year and will then sign off. Not that I expect any PMs, but I will be disabling this feature during my absence. I do hope to see most of you when I return.

Please feel free to use this thread to record your own New Year’s Resolutions for posterity.

Best of luck with your resolution. If you do buckle, don't set up a new alias. Even if nobody found out, that would be pretty pathetic. Just start posting with the same account. The people who would give you shit aren't worth much anyways.

Thunderdog, don't do it.

Don't quit cold turkey. You might get the shakes and make bad trades.

Perhaps set aside a certain amount of time each day or week to do your ETing and adhere to that alotted time. That way you will get your fix, but won't OD.

T-dog,
If ya don't mind me saying so, quitting ET is the wrong goal.
The problem many have is that they have nothing better to do with their time inbetween trades than to surf ET. And then ET becomes bigger than what it is. It's only a message board!

If you have time on your hands between trades, fill that time with something interesting, a hobby or maybe another money making project, whatever.

I think you'll find that ET is just not that important or fulfilling.

I personally work on my other more interesting business. When I get bored with that and still no setups to trade, I do a little relief carving. I'm not very good at it, but it keeps my hands and mind busy while waiting for the prey to stumble into my trap.

Sulong. As a scalper, I have another suggestion. When the market slows down, increase your attentiveness and tune your indicators and intuition to see how SMALL a move you can trade profitably. I find that when I watch during the most boring times, I learn the most. Also, you're alert when those by now inevitable mid-doldrums moves occur. Mike.
