New tone? Rep. Steve Cohen: Republicans are like Nazis

Count them: Only 12 days after lawmakers from both sides of the aisle called for âcivilityâ and a ânew toneâ in response to the shooting in Tucson, Arizona that severely injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and killed six others, Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen has resorted back to using Nazi comparisons to describe his political opponents.
During a speech on the House floor late Tuesday night, Cohen said that Republicans were like Nazis for continuing to call the health care law passed in 2010 as a âgovernment takeover of health care.â
âThey say itâs a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels. You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. Thatâs the same kind of thing, blood libel. Thatâs the same kind of thing,â Cohen said.
Joseph Goebbels was Adolph Hitlerâs director of propaganda during World War II.
âThe Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it â -believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover,â he added.
