New tax plan from leading GOP senator would require all Americans to pay federal income taxes

Why don't we simply allow a person 1 vote for each dollar they pay in federal taxes in the past year.

This would be an incentive for the billionaires to maximize the taxes they pay (or get fewer votes) rather than paying zero each year through clever accounting tricks.

Sort of a Reality Show voting system where people get multiple votes.

P.S. -- Yes, I am trolling. :D

New tax plan from leading GOP senator would require all Americans to pay federal income taxes

A leading GOP senator faced a backlash this week after calling for all Americans to start paying federal income taxes, leading to criticism from both the White House and leading conservative policy experts.

Sen. Rick Scott (Fla.), the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, released an “11-point plan to rescue America” that included a proposal for all Americans to pay some form of income tax, even if it was a nominal amount.

Roughly 50 percent of Americans on the bottom half of the income distribution do not pay federal income taxes because they do not earn enough to have income tax liability and because many receive tax credits. Millions of these Americans do pay federal and state government taxes in the form of payroll taxes, sales taxes and other levies....

Scott’s rhetoric harks back to the widely criticized comments by Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential campaign arguing that the “47 percent” of Americans who pay no income taxes would automatically support the Democratic Party.

It's worth a discussion.

All Americans would feel better if they chipped in on taxes. It would make them feel like they are worth something. :)

At some point, non-payers losing voting rights should be part of the discussion.
It might be a difficult exercise to logically connect the right to vote to income sufficient enough to qualify for income taxes, but nonetheless I'd be interested in any attempt you might make.

Everyone pays taxes, even those on welfare! But some people don't pay income taxes because they have no taxable income, and that can include both those who have very little income and those who have a lot. Frankly, Senator Scott's proposals are designed to appeal to the Republicans' base, which more and more consists of rather poorly informed individuals, many of whom undoubtedly fall in the income-too-low-to-qualify-for-income-taxes category. It appears that a good number of these have been trained to parrot the standard line, "it's the government's fault" as though they were automatons. Never mind that their champions, such as Senator Scott, are in part responsible for the government's faults.

Usually it's-the-Government's-fault contingent that fails to provide any details of what they would substitute for the government they don't want. And they certainly don't tell us what they want the government to do. Some are anarchists, so it is to be expected they won't have anything to contribute. The last Republican President ran on no official platform at all. Instead, his campaign featured chants such as "Lock Her Up", and absurdities such as "Only I can fix it," and "I am going to build a big beautiful wall, and Mexico will pay for it."

Now the current Republican Senate leader, Mr. McConnell, has told us we have to wait until the Republicans take over the Senate to find out what they will do. Senator Scott, in the meantime, has at least proposed real measures he supports; most rather kooky and none likely to be enacted. But Senator Scoot deserves credit for coming right out and letting us know how nuts he is. This is better than insisting that we wait and find out later, so thank you Senator Scott. Sadly most of his Republican colleagues are concentrating on taking swipes at the other side rather than telling us what they would do instead.

We are left with Senator Scott's "platform", such as it is, and the most recent Republican record. It's a record of Obstruction, Destruction and Disregard for our Constitution. When most recently in power, the Republicans ran the country as though it was a realty TV show. In comparison, the present administration looks not only competent but downright brilliant.

I am as adamantly against restricting people from voting if they don't pay taxes as I am against allowing people to vote without proving who they are and that they can legally do so.
