there were also audits. Franklin Graham, Christine O Donnell a pro marriage group Dr. Ben Carson.
Phil Mickelson got smeared for complaining about taxes.
secondly... it could and did have a serious impact on presidential elections.
Obama knew his votes were going down so he had to suppress the tea party vote.
Plus its not only what it did, it is what it represents.

Interesting point until you see the parallels about going after the political opposition.
Every single American including every single politician should be disgusted if not horrified at this IRS abuse of power. The IRS is arguably the most powerful government agency hammer. The IRS can not only make your life miserable, it can utterly destroy a persons life. You have little recourse when they target you. Unless you're extremely well heeled you're pretty much screwed if they target you. This agency should be manned with people who are above reproach. People who have absolutely no political alliance.
At a minimum this cow Lerner should be in a jail cell. This is assuming she acted without instruction and is simply a radical leftist who took it upon herself to target who and what she considered the opposition to her radical left point of view. If there are others involved, they should be jailed as well. This is far too dangerous to just overlook as some partisan hack who was a bit overzealous. What she did tears at the very fabric of our supposedly free electoral process.

Probably people in compliance have a mental "bolo" list anyway. I mean, if someone is on the lookout for groups that might really be political but pretending to be charitable, then that person might want to look at groups with politically loaded words in their names. Worth a second look, anyway.
