The first U.S. case of covid-19 linked to the new omicron variant has been identified in California in a traveler who returned from South Africa on Nov. 22, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

This contrast, prior Omicron cases in Europe that occurred in individuals that were not vaccinated. Simply, I'm sure they will look at this person in California as a "breakthrough case"...assuming the occurs.
Hopefully, this person is n = 1 person and not someone that became infected from someone else that did not get tested after having mild symptoms.
Simply, contact tracing now become a very important part of the equation now.

The obvious answer, it’s crossing international boundaries via fully vaccinated travelers.
By all indications omicron is not near as deadly as it's predecessors, I don’t think any deaths have yet been attributed to it. The question we should be asking does omicron recovery give immunity for delta?

So have they traced their outbreak to an unvaccinated person? I’d say there’s more vaccinated people flying than unvaccinated and since even the makers are acknowledging that omicron may elude current vaccines the odds are in favor of fully vaccinated spread.You could enter Austria as a tourist (before this lockdown) with only a PCR test within 72 hours. You did not need to be vaccinated to fly into Austria.
