New Coronavirus Variant (Omicron; B.1.1529) a ‘Serious Concern’ in South Africa

The Rho variant next year is going to spread twice as fast as Omicron and be twice as infectious as Omicron. It is going to infect the entire planet in a 3-week timeframe. It will snap back the heads of everyone who is not in the know.

After nearly 2 years I finally personally know someone who has gotten covid twice.Cousin and his wife.Wife had a sore throat,night sweats and was fatigued so she got tested and tested positive.He has no symtoms but got tested because she tested positive.He was positve as well.As of last night still no symptoms.Neither has lost thier taste or smell again,they both lost it for months last time.It was worst for both last time.Neither are vaccinated.

FOUR out of five patients in hospital with Omicron have not had a booster jab to protect against Covid.

A total of 608 out of the 815 people receiving urgent care across the country have not had that all-important third shot, while a quarter are completely unvaccinated.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed the data after a study revealed booster jabs give 88 per cent protection against being hospitalised with the new variant.

The encouraging new findings came as Brits were urged to get their extra dose to beat the variant and return to life as normal.

Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid said: "This is more promising data which reinforces just how important vaccines are. They save lives and prevent serious illness.

"This analysis shows you are up to eight times more likely to end up in hospital as a result of Covid-19 if you are unvaccinated.

"It is never too late to come forward for your first dose and it’s vital that everyone comes forward to get boosted now as we head into the new year."

A string of hugely positive studies have found Omicron IS milder than other strains, with the first official UK report revealing the risk of hospitalisation is 50 to 70 per cent lower than with Delta.

Covid booster jabs protect against Omicron and offer the best chance to get through the pandemic, health officials have repeatedly said.

The Sun's Jabs Army campaign is helping get the vital extra vaccines in Brits' arms to ward off the need for any new restrictions.
 
North Carolina faces a surge, but runs into testing issues.

On Thursday, the Wayne County Health Department announced that it had run out of coronavirus tests and would have no tests available “until further notice.”

“Demand for testing has increased significantly nationwide over the past two weeks, and additional test kits have been ordered from the state,” the department said. So far, the county has had the slowest rise in cases in the state.

In New Hanover County, a testing drive on Thursday had to end early because the location ran out of tests, according to a statement from the county.

Wake County, where the daily case count seems to be the highest in the state, announced on Saturday that although its testing sites would be open, there were no available appointments until Monday. The county had doubled its Covid-19 testing appointments to 13,000 daily slots last week “to help meet rapidly increasing community needs,” according to a statement. But the increase failed to meet demand.

Universities in the state are also taking more precautions. Duke University will have remote instruction until Jan. 18, the university announced on Friday. Residence halls will open as planned on Sunday, but the university is asking students to delay their return until instruction resumes as normal.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is recommending that students and professors get booster shots when eligible and said it would announce any changes to on-campus operations by Monday.

Stats from Florida a couple of days ago were over 50% of patients in hospital with covid during that latest wave were hospitalized for an unrelated reason, and discovered in the hospital they had covid
Read a similar number from some european country yesterday.
We ve had plenty of cases lately in Madrid ( seems I just passed it along with my wife, minor issue for both, our kids didn't even feel wrong although they mingled maskless in the same Omicron infected groups we did during that period, nobody vaxxed for covid in our household) it s very mild, not clear it deserves any more restriction than the common cold ( president of Madrid province, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, actually described Omicron as less nocive than a flu, rather comparable to a cold, although she meant for vaccinated folks)
Looks nuts in the face of the little protection vaccines now appear to provide, governments actually double down on vaccination and even, in many shitholes littering the globe nowadays, on covid passports.
