New Coronavirus Variant (Omicron; B.1.1529) a ‘Serious Concern’ in South Africa

South African press briefing this morning on current state of omicron spread, not good:

First Case Of Omicron Variant Detected In LA County

According to the press release, the individual was fully-vaccinated. All of the patient’s close contacts are also in isolation and have tested negative so far.

Of all the US positives, I haven't seen one report of an unvaccinated victim.

Dig a little deeper...a lot of cases in Europe and South Africa involve not being vaccinated but then getting infected with Omicron...that's then followed by hospitalization / ICU admission that jumps 300% - 500% that pushes hospitals there to their capacity limit.

In comparison to the few cases in the United States involving those vaccinated while close contacts are not infected. This is very strange with all the prior stories about vaccinated people shredding the Covid virus.
  • Something is off in the story or so far it's statistically insignificant in the United States. Another thing that I find is strange...they discuss a few details involving South Africa, Europe and Asia...
So far, similar details are not being discussed here in North America unless I missed it (e.g. age, health status prior to infection, vaccine type). If I was a public health official or the CDC...I would be scratching my head about why there's not any community spread like there is in South Africa and Europe.

Also, I would be wondering why there are not more cases in the United States in comparison to Europe considering so far this Omicron is supposed to be more transmissible and supposed to be able to "escape" the immune system defenses.

I think the answer will involve the health status of these people prior to infection and that more people are infected but the illness is so mild...they don't realize it...resulting in not getting tested for Covid.

The latter is dangerous because it will then help exponential community spread...oddly...that's not happening so far. Yet, we're only early December...too soon to make community spread analysis.

We'll have more answers in a few more weeks although something seems very odd in comparing Europe / South Africa against the United States. Yet, I doubt (maybe I'm wrong) that we're doing a good job here in North America in keeping the infection to only several individuals without or with very little community spread.

Could the United States and Canada be so protected from vaccines that Omicron is not able to spread here after infecting a handful of people ?

Nobody is concerned about South Africa or Africa any more ???

The Omicron hospitalization surges over there are making headlines now because its sending children to the hospital.

Lets hope the Omicron hospital surges there doesn't translate to here in North America.

As outlined by WHO, Africa has a high level of deaths from COVID... and this number rapidly increased with Delta. A number of African countries have such poor health infrastructure that they don't report Covid information -- but the countries which are reporting make it very clear the continent is a fiasco.

Let's take a look at information over recent months from Africa... Omiron is only going to make things worse.

Record weekly COVID-19 deaths in Africa

Delta variant has spiked Covid-19 deaths in Africa by 80% in one month, WHO says

Well, I stand corrected. And this does not sound like good news at all. :(
