Nevada State Republican Convention recesses in dissarray

Ah, politics in the Grand Oligarchic Politburo. :D

The Dems may be a mess but at least they try to keep the appearance of fairness and democracy. I get that there are honest and fair Republicans, but never at the top of the party, I've noticed.

All you truly fairminded Republicans should leave this corrupt party and start a new one. The GOP is beyond repair. And yeah the same is probably true of the Dems. Both these dinosaurs work overtime to maintain a stranglehold on American politics and it's past time we kicked them both to the curb.

Vote independent.

Quote from nevadan:

The Nevada State Republican Convention was halted abruptly by a recess from the chair after if became apparent that a Ron Paul upset was in the making.

How did this happen? Nevada State Republican conventioneers, of which I am one, were met today with an agenda that included a rubber stamp vote for National Convention delegates, anointed by the Nominating Committee without any input from the county delegates. A floor fight ensued over the rules for delegate selection, and the result was a change in process to allow for nominations from the floor. This vote was by a roughly 7:4 margin where the preselected slate of candidates for the National Convention was discarded.
After a recess a party official proposed a limited ballot of five names for each delegate instead of the full compliment in order to "streamline" the process and speed the count. This was rejected out of hand by around a 75% majority. The move, imo, was an attempt to weight the vote to Clark County where most of the population resides.
Since RNC rules apparently call for at least three delegates to the National Convention for each Congressional District (Nevada has three CD's) a call for nominations was made and the house divided into the appropriate sections for the selection of these 9 delegates. This contingency was totally unexpected by convention planners and resulted in a lengthy delay during which other business was conducted. Suddenly, Senator Bob Beers, who is the convention chair announced that as a result of our decision to amend the process to give the delegates on the floor a voice in our National delegation, we had caused such a delay as to run us up against the time limit in the rent agreement with the Peppermill Resort and Casino and called a recess and reconvene at an unspecified time and place. I was a delegate at the county convention which was held in the same venue and ran a couple hours long without so much as a peep about problems with the owner of the hall. The dais promptly fled the premises after the recess was called.
Rumor has it that 7 of the 9 delegates selected to fill the CD seats were Ron Paul supporters. The balance of the delegation has yet to be nominated and voted upon.
Anyone who may be participating in the political process and is a Ron Paul supporter would be well advised to be well prepared for your state's convention. Nothing seems to smarmy a tactic to nullify our vote.

Thanks for setting a great example for all us.

A true Patriot.

NEVADA REPUBLICAN PARTY

Dear Nevada Delegate:

I would like to thank you and everyone who attended last weekend’s Republican State Convention in Reno. We had a record turnout and we are pleased that so many Nevada Republicans chose to participate.

Unfortunately, we had to recess the convention without completing all of our work. This was done due to a rule change that took place early in the morning – which caused the convention process to take far longer than expected. Over 200 individuals’ names were submitted to the Nominations Committee for consideration to be selected as delegates to the National Convention. Once voting was opened to the floor, another 187 names were submitted. Although some names may have been duplicates, our Nevada Republican Party By-Laws allow delegates the opportunity to speak on their own behalf. Therefore, the process would have lasted well into the evening and perhaps early into Sunday morning. In addition, individual ballots for those names would have to be printed. Therefore, it was evident a recess was in the best interest of the State Convention and its attendees. This was done primarily due to time restraints and the fact that our contract with the Peppermill for the convention hall had expired.

Aside from delegate selection, I am proud to say that we completed all other convention business. We passed rules, bylaws, credentials, and adopted a State Platform which we hope all Nevada Republicans can be proud of. However, delegates still need to be selected to the national convention and we look forward to doing so in the very near future.

Currently the Nevada Republican Party is working hard to find the best possible way to complete our convention business with the selection of delegates to the National Convention. We will work from within our existing By-Laws, which state that the remaining business must be conducted in Washoe County. It is our sincere hope that once we determine the best way to complete our business for the 2008 State Convention, we will have maximum participation and the process will have taken its course in a fair and respectable manner.

Rest assured that once we determine the process by which we can complete our business, all delegates will be notified directly. We would like to thank everyone for their patience during this time.

Sincerely,

Sue Lowden

Chairman

Nevada Republican Party

Local Donor Offers Facility for NV State Republican Convention

RENO, NV—Nevadans for Ron Paul has learned that a local Republican is donating a room for the reconvening of the Nevada State Republican Convention. The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, is offering the use of this room free of charge to the Party.

The anonymous donor spoke today with a member of Nevadans for Ron Paul. Apparently a letter was sent by the donor to Sue Lowden last week offering the use of the Grand Ballroom at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno to the Nevada GOP. This facility has been reserved for the entire day of June 7th, and has the space and accommodations necessary for the over 1,300 delegates to the Nevada State Republican Convention. The donor expressed their willingness to provide security as well as audio and lightning for the State Convention. The donor is offering this as a turn-key operation for the Nevada State Republican Convention, and is not expecting any reimbursement.

“I’m very concerned about this whole process,” said James Uprichard, a local Republican. “I want my vote to get counted, and I think it was unnecessary for the State Convention to adjourn.” The Nevada State Republican Convention was recessed under questionable circumstances before national delegates were selected. Many local Republicans were dismayed by the abrupt recess.

The donor informed Nevadans for Ron Paul that the State GOP has not contacted them in response to this offer.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- A Sparks dentist and Ron Paul supporter said Wednesday his offer to pay for a Reno hotel-casino room big enough for nearly 1,400 Nevada Republicans stands even though party leaders want to find their own solution to completing a chaotic state GOP convention.

"This is a bona fide offer," said Dr. Wayne Terhune, adding that other potential solutions such as a mail-in process to complete a national GOP convention delegation from Nevada wouldn't be fair...
...Zach Moyle, the state party's executive director, said Tuesday the idea is "to maximize participation, not to pick a random rate," and various dates and locations still are being considered with that goal in mind. He added the party is doing its own legwork and doesn't intend to use the Grand Sierra Resort.

Moyle has said that completing the convention by mid-June would be good, but the goal of a big turnout is more important even if it means the event can't occur until some time in July....

My guess is that "a big turnout" translates to "we are trying to figure a way to get all the no shows into the convention." The original turnout was 62%. Presumably since Romney retired from the race after taking over half the vote in the caucus and before the convention, a large part of the absentee delegates would follow Romney's endorsement of McCain.

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nevada Republicans to Reconvene Nevada State Republican Convention on June 28th.

RENO, NV, 5/30/08--- Nevada Republicans have decided to reconvene the Nevada State Convention at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno on June 28th. The Nevada Republicans say that the State Party has made no move to reconvene and has refused a turn-key convention offer from a local donor.

“The State Party has really left us with no other option,” said Wayne Terhune, a local Republican activist who made the turn-key convention offer to the Party. “We feel the Nevada delegates deserve the chance to have their voices heard and finish this Convention process. The State Party has not followed through with their promises to reconvene, and it has been over five weeks. The Party kept telling us they would reconvene, first in a week, then in two weeks, then in June, and then maybe July. But there doesn’t appear to be any real plans to reconvene, and the delegates have a right to get together and complete the Convention.”

The Nevada State Republican Convention was abruptly recessed on the evening of April 26th. National delegates had been selected from Congressional Districts 1 and 3, and votes were still being counted from Congressional District 2. National at-large delegates had not been selected when the Convention was recessed. The Nevada State GOP has indicated they are working on a venue but have yet to schedule the Convention, despite having five weeks to do so.

In order for the Convention to reconvene, a quorum (a simple majority) of credentialed delegates must be present. If the quorum is present, all business can be conducted, including the selection of national delegates and passing resolutions.

“This isn’t about one candidate versus another,” said Pat Kerby, a Nevada State delegate from Nye County. “This is about credentialed Nevada State delegates getting together to form a quorum and finish the business of the State Convention.”

The Republican activists reconvening the State Convention are all credentialed state delegates from the State Convention on April 26th, and are inviting every credentialed state delegate to come and have their voice heard on June 28th. “We intend to do this right,” said Wayne Terhune. “Everyone will have a fair chance at this reconvening. We think our chances of getting a quorum are excellent, because so many Republicans want to get this process completed. This is our chance to get this done right.”
