Net neutrality

Punch and Judy politics aside, this is a sickening day for every consumer.

You just know that when that Fox has one of the most important decisions of the year in a little link, it is bad. I was an I.T. consultant but when the average Joe understands what they have lost, well it will be too late for their sorry asses.

That's the thing. Most people have no idea what's coming. Cable companies knowing that cord cutting is the trend, but you still need internet. Want the same speed you're getting now? Pay up, otherwise it's 1995 all over again. Watch that cell phone bill go up too. Pay for this page, pay for that page. Want pictures to download in less than three minutes? Pay up. They'll make billions more and not one single job will be created. Why would they hire more to provide the very same service, and in many cases less and slower.

There are political ramifications also akin to gerrymandering. There is nothing to prevent the owners of ISPs from blocking an opponent's content. They could allow it to run but ensure that 60% of videos are choppy or stalled by throttling.

The infrastructure & software to create a centralised equivalent of China's "great firewall" is being put in by stealth.

This is a terrible day for the US and the only trickle down will be to less developed countries who will copy the FCC.

Over the years, I wondered what net neutraility was. Ars Technica, Tom’s Guide, and Anandtech have been covering this issue, but I though it was related to advertiser’s being able to bug you, in exchange for paying for content.

What you guys are saying sounds scary as hell. Is the internet going to be like cable tv? You pay more and more fees and advertising time increases until the medium becomes useless for learning?

I last owned a tv 15 years ago. Guess it’s time to go to Ham radio and using land-based and satelite repeaters.

You think the stock market rally over the last 12 months was because Trump was going to build a wall?

He has already repealed clean water regulations and is providing bailouts to coal companies and I suspect it's just the beginning.

I think these predictions are way off. Net neutrality is about forcing one group of users to subsidize another. Of course, Obama favored his billionaire pals in the silicon valley monopolies. The carriers have little incentive to upgrade facilities when they have to give them away to netflix.

The carriers have little incentive to upgrade their facilities because they are granted natural monopolies.
