Need Help w/ System Resources

I am running win98 and would like to install win2k to alleviate problems. I m not well aquainted with the process. Where do you suggest I find info on how to do it w/ out freaking my machine off the deep end. Thanks for any info.

I tried the msconfig suggestion and it freed a lot of memory. The MaxMem seems to work well also. I'll be formatting the hard drive this weekend and if the problems still persist, I'll get Win2K.

I knew I could count on this group. Keep up the good work!

I had winME on a machine at my house....had the same problem I had 512 ram....barely any resources free all the time....had to reboot 4-5 times a day, or run rambooster (download.com still has it free I belive).

Then I put win2000 on.....

68% of my resources are free compared with 7-10% on initial boot as before. ME basically is 98, so that is almost definitely your problem.

I would also advise win2K. Its the most stable release (!)
of windows MS has released. I have also used WinXP and it
is also good. However there may some incompatibility between
some old proggies and XP so beware.

Would a 2nd hard drive loaded with Win2000 be a viable alternative? Has anyone done this?

I have Win98 and have been considering upgrading to Win2000 but I don't want to lose my Win98 applications and data.

I would like to be able to use my Win98 hard drive & apps for stuff like word processing, e-mail, web surfing, etc., and the Win2000 hard drive for trading.

Yes of course you can do that. However why not do all things
under Win2000 :cool: ?

You gain so much extra with windows 2000!

I assume you have FAT32 on your win98 drive. If you want to
install WIN2K, format your second free drive with FAT16. Copy
all the stuff on the WIN98 drive on to the second drive. Then
install WIN2K on the original drive that had WIN98.

You wont regret it....!!!
