Need help from Excel wizards

Lets say you have a cell a1, b1 and c1.
c1 has a result of a formula which uses a1 and b1. When I copy c1 to another cell(c2 for example) it will change the formula to a2 and b2 values, how do you lock it on a1 and b1 value?I tried " character but no dice

Use $A$1 and $B$1 then the references will not change as you copy the forumula around. If you want to freeze the column and not the row you would use $A1 and $B1 (the dollar sign preceeding each causes them to be absolute references)

Search for "Switch between relative, absolute, and mixed references" in the online Excel help for more details. Apparently there is a hotkey that will do this for you automatically while you are constructing the formula (F4)...never knew that until just now.

The other option is to assign a name to a1 and b1, then reference the name in your formulas. It's under Insert.
