Need a new desktop setup

I despise windows, but need excel macros, so...

My son wanted a Falcon-NW rig for esports gaming. The lead time was something like 8 weeks due to the CPU migration. I went to Dell/Alienware and bought him a water cooled system with a GTX 1080 Ti. $3,600 delivered with the 3Y onsite.

I use the machine during the trading day while he's at school. Crazy fast and overkill, but fills are marginally (noticeably) faster when sending COB orders. I tested the hypothesis with the Alienware vs. a Mac trashcan by sending the same order on each machine, both were routed to CBOE via TOS.

So I bought the identical machine to run at my desk. We can play CS:GO together.

Will you advise your son to go into trading? Or is that a sunset career?

Don't you think it would be a bit different for him than the rest (not taking anything away from abilities, but all else being equal)

Been trading off a laptop with 2 monitors attached. Laptop monitor doesnt count as its too small.
However recently laptop is making lots of noise-(probably due to dust buildup) and its been slowing down.

Was wondering what yall would recommend? According to some searching, seems like i5-i7 is fine as long as the RAM is high. I mainly use thinkorswim for charting/ ninjatrader/ib for execution.

Ideally I would love to have more charts and monitors . Main focus is no lag when markets are moving heavily.
What are the specifications of your current laptop (CPU, RAM, hard drive, graphics)? You mention that it works good enough, so this gives you an indication of your minimum requirements for your next desktop computer.
Usually are trading applications not so heavy on the computer, they don't require high computer specifications.

Go to pcpartspicker.com ; If you are a “do it yourselfer” you can put together a nice system for about 30% off retail. It will check all your parts for compatibility. Mostly a site for gamers but you can browse other individuals system builds and come up with something that will suit your needs for a fair price and understand the trade offs for better pricing. I just built a new system using that site. Ryzen 2700 based system 32gb of ddr4ram ; older 6gb GeForce video and a 3 monitor setup ; 2x34inch lg and 1x25inch lg ; fast system for trading. I use it for nothing else. Lots of ideas from gamers who always want more speed and bang for the buck. Just my 2 cents.

Well, you can easily rack up hours this way, which at any decent salary which will be more than you save by building yourself. About 33-50% of my friends' and my own homebuilds while growing up tended to fail in some way or another (=more cost and time). Buying a finished computer of a type with good reviews is the way to go for nearest to zero trouble IMO.

Use three Dell refurbished currently online at $370 each, 8gb ram ok 16gb better, win 10. Five monitors ,2 on one pc runs medved trader charts with .30 charts and portfolios with 300 stocks. 2nd pc 2 monitors runs thinkorswim trading , could do with more desktop size will probably upgrade to 27 inch monitors. Last pc runs chatroom ,Twitter ,scanner ,browser for Halts etc All depends on how big your desk is, mind is L shaped fits in a corner , dsom people go vertical on the monitors but that gave me neck cramps

Using this puppy with Sierra charts and TOS at same time. No lags, great system. Would strongly recommend NOT running or installing chrome browser on your trading machine as it is immensely resource hungry and runs tons of (sometimes hidden) background processes. Got this from PC specialists.co.uk but I’m sure you can get all same spec if not better anywhere else.
I’m running 2x 55” Samsung 4K TVs for monitors + one 27” Asus monitor. All at 4K output res from this graphics card. Anything over 32mb ram is overkill in my mind unless you are running a shit ton of resource heavy programs.

What are you trading? Your pc is very powerful but I will rather have more monitors.
