Need 900% in 3 years- what would you do?

Hi Xela,

Have you thought about starting a hedge fund? If you're making 100% per year, if you can manage 100 million and get 20% of profits, your fees are 20 million per year. That would be my play if I were kicking out that kind of cheddar.

I know it sounds impossible- but given I have decided that if I don't get back to my high water mark I don't want to go on living, I must try. I do recognize the most likely outcome is 100% loss of capital.

In addition to needing the money badly, I am sitting on many hundreds of thousands of dollars in capital losses which I am determined to use. Bad timing, paid all those taxes in past years then had the big loss in subsequent years, would have been much better off if the timing had been different or if they had lookback for capital losses.

Thanks Julian but looking for something that doesn't have possibility of over 100% loss of capital.

Yes, I know 900% seems impossible- but this is my reality- I have 3 years to do it, or life is over- so of course I have to try.

I am interested in the long version of the story. You indicated that your friends/acquaintances lost even greater percentages. Is this some kind of investment club?
No, many of these people I found online searching for support groups for people with investing losses. Or gambling losses, whichever you like to put it. Worst story I have heard was a guy who went from 100K equity to almost 1 million in the hole on Swiss Franc move. He had a stop loss which obviously made no difference.

For me, it's both the waste of losing all that money that could have gone to real good and my stubborn determination to use the capital losses. I would gladly donate the whole shooting match to charity if I got back up to 1 million. I will admit I have spent many nights praying for death to come for me.

It is not a shame to be down 90%. Many great traders experienced those kinds of losses.

What matters is how you recover. The market owes you nothing. If it takes 10 years to recover, so be it. The most important thing is to understand the mistakes and not repeat them. If you learn from your mistakes and master the game, profitas will come.

Thanks Kim,

I won't be around in 10 years for reasons I won't get into here- so time is of the essence. I agree with the people here who said it requires gambling- to be honest if there were a way to just bet on something binary akin to playing roulette (but something that qualifies for capital gains treatment) that paid out close to 1:1, I would just try to hit 3 or 4 in a row.

Other possibilities I am looking at include waiting for a company like JCP to go bankrupt and buying a ton on the pink sheets for 4 or 5 cents and trying to sell at 50 cents (see SUNEQ and many other examples).

But only 36 months (not counting the rest of this year, which I will be trying to use to study)- so between Jan 1 2018 and December 31 2020 I need 900%. Most likely I will lose it all but I'm going out of this life fighting.

Well, in my opinion, seeking support from people with investment losses would do no good. It's like seeking suicidal people to give you support you when you feel suicidal.

Under the circumstances, I would say the best thing to do is to simply stop trading, and focus on what you do best, be that professionally, academically, or socially.

Can you elaborate...on why you only have 36 months to trade, or live, o_O

Do you have a terminal condition, or are you suicidal...going for glory or bust?

Nothing personal...I could care less either way -- I just want to know why.
People die and go one way or another, eventually. There's hardly nothing poetic or truly beautiful about life.

Finance people are a cold bunch -- I know.

Have two illnesses- one physical, one mental (gambling as has been noted). 36 months is perhaps optimistic but I think I can hold on that long. I know it will take a miracle to get it done. Miracles happen. If I make it back I've got a great legacy to leave to charity. If not, I tried. Have no kids or heirs so no need to leave an inheritance.
