I just think we are unique with respect to citizenship and our history versus other countries which is why I stated that no doubt 95% of voters are within 2 generations of naturalized citizens given the immigration patterns of the past 100 years. That is why I find it funny so many people while proud to be American are so against people who are not from here. That sentiment goes back to before the Civil War even.
The issue is not immigration, it is poverty. When a large group of poor people come in at great numbers, those who are here always object to the lower class coming in.
Irish in NY against the poor Irish immigrants coming after the great Famine
Cubans in Florida railing against the poor Cubans coming in the 1980s
Latinos against the Mexicans.
Korean and Vietnamese against more recent Asians.
It was never about whether the next group came legally or snuck in, it is a tale as old as time..... the poor who make it and become well off always look down on the next group who get more of a head start and helping hand than they did and resent it.
