the only people against the free market are those who haven't made it big for themselves. i know successful entrepreneurs and small biz owners and NONE of them ever complain about capitalism and free markets. they owe their sucess to the free markets.
all the whining comes from rank-and-file employees and shiftless losers who see others making gobbles of money and fail to understand how to do it themselves or unwilling to take risks to do it. that's your problem, not ours.

My friend has a thriving business in Washington D.C. Virginia for 30 years is now being crushed by the Free Market economy that Bush and the DittoHeads have been running for the last 10 years. He whined all the way to the voting booth, and voted the whole cockamamie bunch of them out of there. The first time in memory Virgina voted democratic. If the Free Marketers block the GM bail out (who knows they are weird enough to do it), then the fallout may benefit some shorts for a few days, but the aftermath will so devastate our country (in exactly the same way the Free Marketers did in the 1930s), that the Republicans goose will be cooked for two decades and more. Good riddance.

Well, for one thing, Bush et al didn't run a free economy for the last 10 years...they ran the economy into the ground via a combination of overregulation and underregulation (in the wrong industries) plus a bloated military budget designed only to satisfy a true NWOer.
What kind of business was thriving for 30 years and now not because of the 'free market'...???

Give me a break and stop being so naive. The guys who the Free Marketers put in power are just a bunch of scam artists or too out of it to know what is going on, and then they crush the nation. The ONLY reason, banks, insurance companies, auto companies, are in such a deep mess, and our economy is being crushed, is because of the scam artists who were allowed to run wild while the Republicans looked the other way (and collected they payout, there were a bunch of Free Marketers who became billionaires.) These guys, the scammers and the Republicans who allowed it to happen, drove a thriving country, a bustling economy, with a giant surplus after the Clinton years, into the ground.
Now, after pulverizing our economy, ruining our economy, and destroying our nation's wealth, the Free Marketers, want MORE. They haven't done enough. They want to destroy our whole auto industry and put millions of people out of work, and throw our nation into another Great Depression. The chutzpah of these guys is without limits.
Good news. Sen. Corker (R) says he wants to pass a bill, but one with more teeth in it. Fine with me. I think the whole management at GM should get a flying tooth in their butt. He says:

While I am thoroughly enjoying the diatribe between richrf and angrycat, I must disagree with this statement.
The domestic auto industry has pretty much destroyed itself. I, along with many others, simply will not purchase a GM, Chrysler or Ford automobile. They have for too many years created an inferior product and I have lost trust in their ability to provide the experience I want -- in a car and dealership.
Here the free market works great. Not only do I not want an american made car but I'm willing to pay more for a Toyota or Honda. They make fewer lines of quality cars the consumer wants -- not what the CEO thinks the consumer wants in a wide variety of POS cars. LOL.
Giving money to them is throwing good money after bad. Let them fail and have new entreprenuers risk their money to build a new american auto industry that can compete with their foreign counterparts. Who by the way have very successful plants in the United States that pay fair wages and benefits.
How much of your money would you like to "lend" to the auto companies before you say it is enough?

The GM executives, who directed this fiasco into this mess (I am sure they are Republicans who support Free Markets, because this allows them to steal as much for the kitty as they can), should be kicked into the giant mess pile they helped to create. But it is shear, naive, ideology, to put millions of workers on the streets with no life support (the Republicans have successfully stolen everyone's retirement savings), just because the powers to be, drove the companies, the country, and the economy into oblivion.
I understand that we need strong industry managed by smart management to get this country growing. Punishing workers even more because of what the Republican Fat Cats did over the last eight years, is just shear insanity - which evidently reigns supreme in a political party that had the audacity to present a dimwit like Palin as potential chief executive of this country.

You didn't answer my question as to how much of your tax money will you "lend". 15 billion, 34 billion, 50 billion, 100 billion, 1 trillion, 4.5 trillion. While we are lending money to the car companies, let's not forget the PMI and insurance companies, state governments, city governments, etc, etc, etc. Hell, I know Walmart is doing pretty good and is one of the largets employers in the US but they could always use a few extra billion.The market will prevail whether you want it to or not.
After you answer my first question, I have but one more. Where will you draw the line and why?
Like any investment, the government should look at a well drawn out business plan, that would not only attract government money but also private investment money. Depending upon the plan, and what it requires, I would decide how much to invest. I was a VC at one time, and I know how to draw up plans and sell them.
However, we have some dimwits, running these organizations, and are making millions while they run these companies into the ground. So there is nothing to look at. What do they care? It is a Free Market. They can do what they want. They can vote themselves giant salaries, loot the bank, and then walk away with a very nice life, while our country goes down the drain.
So, if the Republicans put in the bill that these idiots have to be ousted, and some management is put in place, and they have to come up with a plan that attracts public and private investment, then I would put up what is required.
But, I have no idea what is going to happen, and it all depends on who runs the show. This is where Obama comes in. It is not a do-nothing, know-nothing, like Bush. He is competent, and has extremely competent people around him, who will no doubt come up with actions similar to ones I suggest. It is hopeless trying to get a rationale approach while a dimwits like Bush and Palin are out in front leading this country. They should go into hibernation with their auto executive friends, and leave us to do the necessary work over the next eight years. And please, any other Free Market person, who can't get enough of the fiasco that they help create - take it somewhere else. I am sure there is a country somewhere that hasn't been devastated by Free Market ideology, that they can experiment with.
