Well then I guess he will not be going back to empirica after his sabbatical.

He should have more than enough dosh by now.
Since he has already survived a life threatening illness and is not getting any younger - the guy probably wants to drink pastis, write essays on epistemology, and debate randomness with his students at Columbia U (and the occasional seminar with Wilmott)...
 
Derman spent all his street life working with exotic options, not simple-vanila stuff. For the exotics, it is still the playground of the professionals.
