Nasdaq / S&P Futures, index?

Hi this is a noob question, but I'm a noob. In alot of posts people say they check the Nasdaq Futures or S&P Futures to confirm direction of the market or trend. What exactly are they checking here? Are there indexes of the S&P and Nasdaq futures? If so whats the symbols? or are they checking specific contracts? Maybe the ones closest to expiration? thanks
