Searching for water is a prelude to possible colonization. The moon would be a low-gravity launch point for missions to other planets (remember Bush talking about going to Mars?)

If there is enough water, then colonization is easier since you don't have to truck it there yourself (Space station guys drink recycled urine - yuk) but if you want to grow things like food it'd be better to have some water on site.

Besides, if we don't get there and stake some claims, guess who eventually will? It's another "high ground".

Have you ever heard of supply and demand?

The total number of individuals who will die during our current depression will negate the necessity to colonise the moon. We will have enough water.

However that has nothing to do with the brainless fucking idiots who have decided to pursue this course of action.

NASA will tomorrow launch a spectacular mission to bomb the Moon. Their LCROSS mission will blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying a missile that will blast a hole in the lunar surface at twice the speed of a bullet. The missile, a Centaur rocket, will be steered by a shepherding spacecraft that will guide it towards its target - a crater close to the Moon's south pole.
