I am always gratified when someone with Porter's insight agrees with me.

It’s beyond credibility to think Sessions made this decision with the intention to backstab Trump after sticking his neck out politically to support him. And given his distinguished pedigree as the only senator representing America, I hardly think
cowardly cuck is a rational alternative hypothesis. Most likely Sessions simply felt honor bound to step aside in order to avoid even a trace of conflict or impropriety. And that’s the kind of attitude that loses countries.
For a man who is bound by honor in a war with the left, is bound to lose. Honor being that tender spot in its opposition the left invariably stabs toward. What does honor offer a corpse but flattering eulogies? We won’t even get those. If the West dies, its honor dies with it. Our replacements won’t sing paeans to our noble sacrifice. And we’d still be dead if they did. We have to win. That is the priority. And winning means staying in the fight, even when your enemies howl at the indignity. Despite his singular fidelity in Congress to the actual American people, I think Sessions hasn’t fully comprehended that no one in this existential conflict is going to be left wearing a pristine uniform above ground. Honor and honesty aren’t how things are decided here anymore.
Though
with honor is always how Sessions conducts himself, regardless. And perhaps that’s a remnant of legacy-America that no longer serves its adaptive interests. Clearly the
utter absence of honor hasn’t inhibited the advancement of some people.
If that’s the case–and in any competitive petri-dish society it almost certainly is–then perhaps we have found an effective tribune. Were Martel or Sobieski or John of Austria honest, loyal, or polite gentlemen? I don’t know…and neither does anyone else. The reason no one knows about their personal virtues is that these men were fighting to save countries, not souls. They became (now fading) legends because they were effective, not because they were good. That the two are actually not synonymous is something a vast number of people can not digest. Whether Donald Trump emerges into that league of champions, or is ultimately found to be just a petulant, paper-skinned narcissist is for the future to reveal."
