Guessing a stock is going up or down is never a sound trading method, nor is buying a put or a call to leverage that guess.
 
while you clearly lost on the trade, I would not say it was a mistake. Is everything you do that does not go your way a mistake? Your thesis was wrong recognize that learn from it and move on. If I research a investment and put a trade on and it goes the wrong way for me I think: the investment was not wrong I missed something while researching, what did I miss, try not to miss that again- just my 2 cents
