My PC just died, how do I bring it back?

About an year ago i lost a PC - same clicking sound of hard drive and then complete silence. After wasting a ton of time i reckon the harddrive failed; and i had no idea what data was on it and i lost it all. Must have lost a bunch of home videos and pics.

After postponing taking backups for ever i finally got an external HD and made backups of the other trading pc and laptop. Been a while since my last backup; clock ticking.. time i take another backup.

I bought a norton ghost cd a long time ago (maybe 6years or so) but never used it; so i figured i will use opensource this time. Currently using DriveImage XML for images. Not sure if it will work or not; time to get acronis i suppose.

Though I've never used it, Macrium Reflect gets good reviews and has a free version.

As to the "clicking sound" of the HDD... as soon as you have even ONE hiccup or irregularity in the operation or sound of your drive, you should be looking to get the data off of it and replace ASAP. Not worth trying to "save" it.... not only not "worth" trying to save it, almost never works.

did you get all your data off?

I've gotten pretty good recently at data recovery.

I'm also really cheap - like beer money cheap (parts & materials plus throw me a bone)

and I'll also be straight with you and tell you whether or not I can handle getting you 100% of the data before I open up the drive and ruin it for someone more qualified.

Sorry to solicit but it sucks when you lose a drive and have to evaluate whether or not it's worth spending that much cash to get the data back.

The pictures and videos you'll get off the harddrives should be payment enough :D Actually....I may have to charge you to have you help me!

And that's not to mention the privacy agreement you'll have to sign....the girlfriend will be really pissed when she finds those pictures on some website

Reminder to self....set-up that back-up system over the weekend.

"Girlfriend would be pissed"? Where can we see what she would be pissed about??

A few years back I switched most of my PC data to off-line storage. I put the data off-line on a LaCie 2big Quadra 2 TB 2-Disk RAID Hard Drive that runs about $300 from Amazon. With four RAID levels, it meets my storage needs, whether it’s for security, capacity, speed or a combination of these.

What is left on my main PC has only to do with trading and is fast and easy to back up to the LaCie Hard Drive using Acronis. The one recovery I had to do since I started using the LaCie took a quarter of the time as a full PC.
