My Oanda Platform Problems

Cable,

My pleasure if it can help!

I tried up to 6u6 under XP and experenced execution lags etc. crap after what I downgraded to 6u5 and it fixed the problem. But I have a friend who have tried all ways including voodoo ritual dances around his XP based computer and still can't manage to make Oanda run without Java glitches. :D

Under Ubuntu Linux 8.04 along with Sun Java 6u10 installed I do not experience any problem with Oanda.

As for Linux itself - I like it's stability and security as first features to mention, at least Java apps run more smoothly and reliably under it for me.

Also it seems to use hardware resources more optimally...

MT4 runs absolutely OK under Ubuntu (which I use) with help of Wine (Win32 API implementation for UNIX) as well as Quotetracker does (use it with IB feed).

Not that XP was a nightmare, it was OK, but Linux definitely is what I like - gives a stable, secure, easily configurable environment for free... So just see no reason to help MSFT go up by buying their products. :)

P. S. I am also very interested in how you use MT4 with Oanda feed.

lol, 'voodoo ritual dances', hey I've got one of those for trading :)

Linux all sounds pretty good, I think I'll try it on a laptop first and see how it goes, see if I get any problems with other software.

I don't actually use MT4 with an Oanda feed, I like having a few feeds available from different sources as it highlights when something is wrong (ie price freezes, disconnects, quote manipulation etc). As far as I know no-one has managed it yet, or if they have they're keeping it quiet :)

Yeah, good idea is to try it on a separate machine or at least separate partition (with a double boot enabled), get used to it and then prolly move completely.

As for MT4 - understood. I also use it with it's own feed just for the reference and when need to look back say a year back of 5min data.

1-click is now on FXTrade! I haven't tried it yet but it looks quite useful, is it the same as the beta version?

(ignore the spreads, it's the weekend!)

...Not sure what else to label this thread.I'd like to say 'my Oanda happiness' but thats not happening so far and I think its worth explaining,in case other Oanda users are having the same problems.
First,I'm using the Oanda platform to trade forex.
I know there are other platforms out there, some you pay for , etc...and maybe this is why people pay for better platforms.
As a trader who focuses on extensive technical analysis,I'm setting up the platform screen with 4 time frame charts, full of trendlines, and CCI on all charts ...I have alot of data on the screen...and I'm finding very frequently, the Oanda platform cannot handle it.
the more data I put on the screen, the slower it all works, and too often, execution glitches happen as I try to trade..."commuinication error" messages. jumbled screen data gets in the way on the trade ticket, etc.
My DSL is pro high speed.
The platform works ok when I place less data on the screen... but I dont want to place less data...I want exactly the amount I'm putting up...4 time frame charts,(sometimes 5) CCI, extensive trendlines, ... Ive developed my little 'holy grail' of data and I'm seeing it work successfully....to 'predict' my exact entry time, the direction of movement,my target,etc...with 90% accuracy...this is my set up I want. and everythings great until I pull the trigger on a trade...and Oanda platform 'shuts me out' with a "communication error" message, transaction fails....ruins my trade entry.

or some other screen data glitch that prevents me from executing a trade. and I sit and watch price move exactly as I expected.
I also have been seeing Oanda disconnect me at precisely the moment I want to trade , for example,on key reversal signals at the exact top of a high, where everyone in the world knows its going to reverse...Oops,disconnected again.

So my question is ...does anyone else using Oanda...place alot of data on their platform screen,as a trading method....and finding the Oanda platform cant handle it ? or refuses to handle it?
and do you find that Oanda plays these other shady games and tricks on you at critical moments when your entry time is Precise for a big move?

This week these 'glitches and disconnects, and 'communication error' execution failures happened at least 10 times.
and,as I said,my DSL is professional high speed.
Is the problem with the dsl? or Oanda platform?

Are there any other platforms I can use ,to trade with Oanda, that will handle large amount of screen data.

Thanks for any constructive comments.

hi tom,

I had the same problem before.

All solved now, unless Oanda disconnect ME! :D

1.) Java 6u6 is great, had problem with 6u7, 6u10

2.) This is a biggie, i never close my oanda during the day, bloody impossible to reconnect and have the charts load (hance no problem unless they disconnect me)

3.) The more tools you got on it, the slower it goes, hell yes! I have 8 TFs, and 5 indicators (single indicator on 5 TFs), and it get slower everytime i add an indicator. Running 2 x 1920 x 1200 desktop all filled with Oanda, seem to slow significantly right down after i add a small monitor 1024 x 800to tests MACD, just a single chart. I am running an AMD 2.6Gz x4 (2.5 overclock slightly) with 4G of DDR 800 run 32bit Win XP.

Not 100% sure, but it seems oanda's platform is only use a single core, it is quite unacceptable I want try more indictors on the lower TFs, might try an some new hardware soon :) but rightnow, with the way i trade, it is fine :)

I hope everything goes smooth for ya, drop me a line when you have time, Tom.

Cheers

Will

that would be me, CF, yes I danced naked around a pole to please my oanda software, hehehe

refer to my post just prior to this one, nowadays I don't load oanda in and out like you would with another other program, i think Oanda don't work well with with the Java Launcher (think java start up etc)

Hi Will, (and CF) happy new year to you all.
Yes when I posted this about Oanda back in august...was having those issues, and since then 2 things, one I did realize that the problem was I was overloading the platform with too much details, trendlines, etc....and as you say, probably was the Java system, and the strength of my computer as well....since then, I have upgraded my memory card ans reinstalled better Java, and the problem isnt happening now.

but as long as I was critiquing Oanda....heres my current complaint......Oanda had a 10 pip spread for the last several hours of new york session wednesday. That prohibits trading in my book.
they have 10 pip spread always at the start of new weeks on sunday ,for the first 6 hours.
what a drag.....

Happy holidays to all....
