My New Laptop System - Please Critique

That still doesn't tell you whether the problem is with a faulty TradersStudio software or not enough CPU horsepower.

One way to find out... run the same software on a known faster CPU. If it's still 97%, problem is like software.

well it depends somewhat on what have now?

I think you said 2.0GHz but is that a Intel Core2Duo?

I've got a laptop with a 2.5GHz (t9300) core2duo, we could definitely time a backtest and compare the results...

My current laptop is a 2.0GHZ but its not a Core2Duo - its a three year old laptop - so its the old Intel Pentium

then the new machine is even more likely to smoke the old one. ;)

Well, it says you already have plenty of RAM and adding more won't help.

You still don't know whether the problem is "faulty software", or "not enough CPU grunt".. but it's definitely NOT lack of RAM.

Your Peak is slightly over your Physical.
Memory size is not the major cause that slows down your machine.

You definitely need more brute force.

even "faulty software" that is running in a loop casing 100% cpu usage, is going to run that loop faster with a faster processor...

his backtests WILL run faster with a faster cpu.

So it seems the summary here is that mnx believes the new 2.6Ghz CTD processor will improove my performance

while gnome feels that the issue is primarily software and neither more RAM nor a faster processor will improve my performance.

so what to do???!!

1. Check with the software vendor.

2. Test your software on a known faster system and see if the result is the same. Also, there could be other software on your rig which in combination with your back-tester, is facilitating this high CPU usage. The way to eliminate this possibility is to do a fresh install of the OS and run only this program.

Bottom line... you can't know yet. Others want to jump to the conclusion, "more CPU power is the answer".. maybe it is, maybe not. You can determine the fact in advance, or you can simply guess.

Tums and mnx vs. Gnome.....

well you can take our word for it, or preform some kind of benchmark.

if it's too difficult for me to preform a test you may be able to slow down your cpu and time the difference of 2 tests... ;)

do you know what a BIOS is and how to enter it?
