My Goal for 2008: Trading to Trade Well

Update for week ended 9/19/2008.

It felt pretty good and I appreciate the profits. Not as cautious as I had planned to be after last week, but it just felt natural from the beginning. I hit plenty of home runs (relative to what I usually get), but must remain humble in my approach. I increased position size this week (been delaying this) and anticipate increasing it to 12K next week.

Update for week ended 9/26/2008.

This week I fell back into an old bad habit of listening to the news and letting that affect my trading decisions. When I first started trading, I thought it was important to listen to the news, see all the latest releases, and trade off that. How wrong that is - all the news did for me was put a bias into my head and fuck my P/L. The only thing an economic calendar is good for is to tell me when not to trade.

Despite being whipsawed around a lot on Monday and Wednesday and making bad decisions the rest of the week, luckily I was able to recover the P/L well this week. I may take the rest of the month off to clear the mind and start October out fresh. Had to delay posting results because Oanda was doing maintenance all yesterday night.

I hate to be a cheerleader, giving congrats to trades that weren't according to plan and just came out lucky...but good work on the gains nonetheless.

The only thing an economic calendar is good for is to tell me when not to trade.

Update for week ended 10/3/2008.

This was a fucking nightmare of a week and I felt it coming. Fortunately it wasn't reflected in my P/L, but mentally I know how capable I am of doing serious damage. I have grown too complacent and must whip myself back into order. It is a really humbling feeling I have now and must take some time off and/or scale back the quantity of trades (as I did this week). One day at a time.

I think I scraped up a few pips with a couple trades (I'll reconcile the account tonight). The spreads have been really wide and the moves exaggerated so I have just sat on the sidelines with my hands in my pockets and tried not to get caught up in something too stupid.

Hope you made some money - I'm sure there are plenty of people pulling in a lot (and others losing their shirts :p )!
 
Sounds good, looking forward to the update.

The volatility has been killing my stops all week...trades were right on track but those spikes on the 5 minute were after me.
 
Update for week ended 10/10/2008.

This was one of my lightest weeks this year (only 3 positions) as I got into defensive mode. Tried to avoid trading altogether because it is hard for me to shake my bias from all this bullshit news about the market that is just everywhere I turn. I'll continue to play it by ear next week and see if I can scalp something out.

Another light week - It is so dark and cold in the early morning I just don't want to get up to sit at the computer (can't wait for the time change). Sunday I really nailed a EURUSD position, getting in at 1.35 and riding it up. The rest of the week I was brain dead.

Another quiet week sitting on the sidelines for the most part. Thursday I grabbed a nice USDCAD drop (first time I've really looked at it this year) but that was mostly luck.

This unprecedented volatility is too much for my stomach - I'm sure others are doing very well, but I must wait it out. Maybe at one point I would have loved the action, but right now I'm not in the mood for it and am out of sync.
