My friend has a college ap question: "what is hispanic or latino?"

He feels that if he is "hispanic or latino" that he will undoubtedly have easier admissions criteria and access to additional financial aid that he wouldn't get if he were merely caucasian. He's thinking of checking the "hispanic or latino" box on the application.

U.S. official use of the term "Hispanic" has its origins in the 1970 census. The Census Bureau attempted to identify all Hispanics by use of the following criteria in sampled sets:[8]

* Spanish speakers and persons belonging to a household where Spanish was spoken
* Persons with Spanish heritage by birth location
* Persons who self-identify with Spanish ancestry or descent

Hispanic (Spanish: hispano, hispánico) is a term that originally denoted a relationship to the ancient Hispania (geographically coinciding with the Iberian Peninsula). During the modern era, it sometimes takes on a more limited meaning, relating to the contemporary nation of Spain.

So, anyone who "self identifies with spanish ancestry or descent" is "hispanic or latino". If his mother's side has spanish ancestry, or if he "self identifies" with spanish ancestry, then he can check the box and get all the additional aid. Right?

We have a Mexican chick that works in the house here, she is super cute... I could self-indentify with Spanish ancestry sometimes if I closed my eyes, maybe fake it until I make it....

in the past, for Federal purposes, the way it worked for Amerinds was if you thought you were one, you were... nobody at the Fed level would ever bother to try to disprove you... the people at the schools just want to get their quotas satisfied to keep the Feds from nosing in and saying they are racists... check "all the above" for all they give a rat's ass...
