Swiss train attack: 6 passengers, including 1 child, suffer burn, knife wounds

Six passengers were injured when a 27-year old Swiss man poured out flammable liquid inside a train in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen and set it alight, local police say. The alleged perpetrator was also armed with a knife.
UPDATE: A 34-year-old woman died of her wounds on Sunday, police said. Three more people, including a 6-year-old, remain in hospital. Authorities say there is no evidence to date that this was a terrorist or politically motivated attack; the suspect has no criminal record.

Video footage showed the man using a knife in the attack and igniting flammable liquid. When the train pulled into Salez station, a passer-by dragged the attacker onto the platform, preventing the situation from worsening. This person also had to be treated for injuries.

The footage has led the police to believe the attacker was acting alone.

"To date there is no evidence this was a terrorist attack or politically motivated," said a police statement issued on Sunday. A spokesman confirmed the man had been Swiss, from a canton bordering St Gallen, and did not have an immigration background. He did not have a criminal record.

'Brainwashed' would-be foreign fighter Amin Mohamed now wants to help other young Muslims

Mohamed's barrister Julian McMahon told Victoria's Supreme Court on Monday his client was a reformed offender, who accepted he had been "brainwashed or radicalised" and wanted to help other vulnerable youths.

"[He] now understands that extremists do prey on young vulnerable people such as he was, and he wants to do what he can to assist people who are in the position that he found himself back at that time," Mr McMahon said.

He said Mohamed had also realised that Al-Qudsi was a "homewrecker", who was "sending young men to a danger zone".

Mr McMahon said his client had the rare support of a number of friends who were in court on Monday.
