In general though, if sane, he must have known that he would likely be shot and probably killed...so courage was required to overcome the natural fear.
I said acting in the face of death is either courage or insanity...in which case if he is declared insane he would not be found guilty by virtue of insanity and be sent to a medical facility for treatment.
If he is found sane, then to act against death, which is a natural fear of all sane people...is courageous.
