"Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems, or methods of doing something. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description, but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work."
 
Thanks, gttrader for the answer. What does that exactly mean in this context, that "Copyright" is a useless word and your work is not protected at all?

In the FAQ part at the US copyright site (http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/), the following points are mentioned:

  1. "Copyright protects “original works of authorship” that are fixed in a tangible form of ex-pression."
  2. Copyright protects (among others) "literary works". in which computer programs and most “compilations” may be registered as “literary works”.
  3. Copyright does not protect "Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, as distinguished from a description, explanation, or illustration".

Therefore, it seems that there is a point in the copyright issue, as the following show (same site):
  1. As quoted there, "You need to get the written authorization from the copyright owner or from his or her designated agent for using any of the copyright woks."
  2. You can "use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports.".
  3. "Only the owner of copyright in a work has the right to prepare, or to authorize someone else to create, a new version of that work. Accordingly, you cannot claim copyright to another's work, no matter how much you change it, unless you have the owner's consent.".

Your question is answered in the above posts, that "Copyright protects (among others) "literary works". in which computer programs and most compilations may be registered as literary works..

As explained further on copyright site, that any computer software is copyrighted. The software can consists of scripts, modules and small programs etc.
