No they weren't. They were working to disrupt US politics, period. They probably never believed Trump would win either, and didn't focus resources on him like they did Hillary - who was the favored winner by far. The Russians instituted a plan to influence and change US politics much in the same manner the US has done it forever, trying to influence elections in countries all around the world.

Based on what I’ve read, the Russians had multiple operations ranging from social media, rally organization, criminal hacking and releasing. They were responsive when Trump took major blows during the campaign for example after access Hollywood tape the release of Podesta emails...
