Motivation for Trading

I am one of those lucky people who doesn't need to do it for a living. My motivation is that I like to learn to succeed at doing difficult things. The extra money is nice too.

Please don't tell me it's easy if you have another source of income. It may be less stressful, but it isn't easy.
 
Of course everyone does it for the money. But do they also do it to prove something to someone, to subconsiously want to fail and receive sympathy, to achieve success and fulfill a need for recognition or praise?

There's lots of reasons why people trade. I suspect that the ones who don't make it are pandering to a different need than money, likely one they have not addressed, or do not want to acknowledge.

The incredible freedom to NOT have to retire if I so choose, to do this as long as I like, as old as I like. How many jobs can you say that about?! :)
 
i love the game.. to me its not about the stuff you get from being successful at something.. its about what you become in the process of achievment..

I consider myself very lucky to do the work I like doing. This applies to my full time job and part-time trading.

A Magna pointed out when the full time job ends the trading doesn’t have to.

The satisfaction I get from trading is immeasurable – beats any other activity I can think of (well, almost :D).

For me, it not all about winning and losing – it is really about participating - the way Olympics are meant to be.

Hmm, trade for your country – there is an idea.

I usually answer "why would anyone do anything else"....When we started trading on the Options Floor in the 1970"s, no one even knew what a "market maker" was (not much fun at cocktail parties!). The independence is cool, but I think that playing the game is the biggest motivator for most. Being able to compete in the highest level financial arena available is what gets me up every morning. Very few of us can compete in major league sports, or the olympics, but we can play in the big leauges here.

When I first started trading (and lost some money), my brother told me that everything is different now...we are in tthe "big leagues" - and if we were able to continue playing, then we would eventually win .....and winning is simply being able to play everyday..

Enough philosophising, back to the orignial..."why would anyone do anything else?"
