These rote accusations of racism have lost their force due to overuse. Frankly, it says more about the person hurling the accusations than it does the target. It has become shorthand for the inability to articulate a rational argument.

You are an actual racist but like many others like you, I know you don’t care.
When it comes to you and some others, you have very real racist ideas that are ingrained in your belief system and moral code now. You just don't like the label, but so what, it is what it is and anything to make you rethink your ideas or at least make you somewhat uncomfortable has value.
Trump was just using the same accusation the left uses on him. The question was not racist but the reporter's intent was clearly bad. She purposely turned 'nationalist' into 'white nationalist'. They are very different. One is racist and the other is not.
"White nationalist" is a term the media invented to slander people who do not want the country overrun with illegals and phony refugees. It is designed to immunize the obvious anti-white racism of the left. Certainly there are some racists in the alt right, although I suspect the most vocal are undercover FBI agents trying to foment incidents. You will find ten or a hundred times as many anti-white haters on the left. The difference is the latter are not considered out of the mainstream and are not marginalized. They are hired as editorial writers for the NYTimes.
Within the liberal media, dem party and establishment republican circles, if you prefer that one goal of immigration is not to drastically alter the ethnic or religious balance of the country, you are slandered as a racist and "white nationalist", ie the group who built this country.
If your openly stated goal is to replace white voters with immigrants, you are well within the mainstream of the democrat party and no one in the media or establishment republican circles will attack you.
And, if you raise the honest question of which approach has worked out best for other countries, you are called a racist. You only have to scroll up a few posts to see that.

No, that's literally not the definition of racism. The definition of racism is the belief in superiority over another race.
Racial and racism do NOT mean the same thing.
