The most transparent thing about the obama admin is that they are a bunch of liars and criminals.

HOLDER TO MEET WITH PRESS ON DOJ JOURNALISM GUIDELINES...OFF THE RECORD

US Attorney General Eric Holder will reportedly meet this week with Washington bureau chiefs at major media outlets to brief them on how the Justice Department deals with journalists who work with leakers. Michael Calderone of Huffington Post reports, “It’s not yet certain exactly when the meeting (or meetings) will take place, but a Justice Department official confirmed to The Huffington Post that it would be sometime over the next two days.” Invitees will include Huffington Post Washington bureau chief Ryan Grim.

The discussion will be off the record.

Last Thursday, President Obama stated that Holder would meet with journalists to explain the DOJ’s standards for media, and said that Holder would “consult a diverse and representative group of media organizations.” Off the record, of course.
The Obama administration has met with reporters off the record in recent weeks to brief them on the White House's positions on areas of controversy like Benghazi.

Its a secret meeting among journalists, that has about as much chance of remaining secret as a buyout rumour on the floor of the exchange.

Thats what makes them look amateurish for even proposing the meeting.

One of the most disappointing attributes of the Obama administration has been its proclivity for secrecy. The president who committed himself to "an unprecedented level of openness in government" has followed the example of his predecessor by invoking the "state secrets" privilege to derail litigation about government misdeeds in the war on terror. He has refused to release the administration's secret interpretation of the Patriot Act, which two senators have described as alarming. He has blocked the dissemination of photographs documenting the abuse of prisoners by U.S. service members. And now his Justice Department has proposed to allow government agencies to lie about the existence of documents being sought under the Freedom of Information Act, or FOIA.

At present, if the government doesn't want to admit the existence of a document it believes to be exempt from FOIA, it may advise the person making the request that it can neither confirm nor deny the document's existence. Under the proposed regulation, an agency that withholds a document "will respond to the request as if the excluded records did not exist."

This policy is outrageous. It provides a license for the government to lie to its own people and makes a mockery of FOIA. It also would mislead citizens who might file an appeal if they knew there was a possibility that the document they sought was in the possession of a government agency. Such an appeal would allow a court to determine whether the requested document was covered by an exemption in FOIA.

Cant see how Holder can possibly survive, the NYT and AP, two liberal havens have both turned on him, and this was the huffington posts lead article.

Off the record press conference = amatuer hour at the whitehouse.

If anything significant/damning is said by holder we can guarantee it will be leaked to the papers, so they arent actually getting away with anything, meanwhile, everyone looks at it, and thinks it is shady as fuck, its a lose lose scenario that only an incompetent buffoon would engage in, just another notch that puts the incompetence of this administration on full display.


New York Times, AP Won't Attend Off-The-Record Eric Holder Meeting

NEW YORK -- The New York Times and Associated Press said Wednesday that they will not attend a meeting this week between Attorney General Eric Holder and the Washington bureau chiefs of several media outlets to discuss guidelines for journalists in leak investigations.

Times executive editor Jill Abramson cited the Justice Department's request that the discussion be kept off the record as a reason for not attending.

"We will not be attending the session at DOJ," Abramson said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "It isn't appropriate for us to attend an off the record meeting with the attorney general. Our Washington bureau is aggressively covering the department's handling of leak investigations at this time."

"Evidently, there will be a future session with department officials on the substance of how the law should be applied in leak cases and I am hopeful that our counsel, David McCraw, will be able to participate in that meeting," Abramson added.

President Obama announced last week that Holder would meet with media executives to discuss guidelines concerning journalists caught up in leak investigations. There has been growing concern among journalists and lawmakers about the DOJ's tactics following the seizure of Associated Press phone records in one investigation and the accusation in court documents that a Fox News reporter may have committed a crime in the course of reporting in another.

With the Times refusing to accept the off-the-record ground rules, it seems likely other news organizations will similarly decline to meet with Holder.

AP spokeswoman Erin Madigan White told HuffPost in a statement that the organization would also not attend if the meeting is off the record.


"We believe the meeting should be on the record and we have said that to the Attorney General’s office. If it is on the record, AP Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll will attend," Madigan White said. "If it is not on the record, AP will not attend and instead will offer our views on how the regulations should be updated in an open letter. We would expect AP attorneys to be included in any planned meetings between the Attorney General’s office and media lawyers on the legal specifics."

The Huffington Post's Washington bureau chief, Ryan Grim, also said the news site would decline an off-the-record meeting.

Following Abramson's announcement, Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse tweeted that President Obama had asked the attorney general "to review how leak investigations are done but some in the media refuse to meet with him. Kind of forfeits your right gripe."

Journalists would argue that the issue is not about simply refusing to meet with Holder, but that the government shouldn't set conditions that would prevent news organizations from reporting on what takes place.

CNN's Jake Tapper tweeted a link to Woodhouse's remark and noted mockingly, "This is actually the spokesman for the Democratic National Committee."
