I think anyone with serious ambition would probably have jumped at the chance even if they knew they had virtually no chance of winning. The screen time could not be purchased at any price, nor the commensurate bump in Q rating. Anyone who was competent in front of the cameras (unlike Palin) would have come out a net huge winner even though the ticket lost.
