More Assholes Who Need to Go to Jail

This must be what tolerance looks like. Don't worry the New York Times backs this. With their track record its a wonder they are still in business.

New York's venerated theater organization, the Public Theater, is facing a PR disaster over its long-running free "Shakespeare in the Park" series. The organization is mounting a production of Julius Caesar, which (spoiler alert!) ends with the Roman politician being assassinated. Many far-right online personas—including Donald Trump Jr.—consider this to be offensive given that Caesar appears Trump-like in this particular production. (It depicts him with blonde hair and modern attire.)

A flurry of online trolling and hysteria over the show has resulted in two corporate sponsors—Bank of America and Delta—cutting ties with the Public Theater. But not everyone is ready to cut and run. Today the New York Times, another corporate sponsor, confirmed to me that it will continue supporting the theater.

Here's the Times' statement:

"We have sponsored Shakespeare in the Park for 20 years. As an institution that believes in free speech for the arts as well as the media, we support the right of the Public Theater to stage the production as they chose."

Hopefully Delta and BofA will read it and learn something. This entire ordeal is sad and annoying because, one, free speech exists so that theater organizations can put on "edgy" shows, and, two, this show is not edgy—it's a William Shakespeare play where everyone already knows the ending. CGW

Meanwhile in Putin's Russia thousands and thousands of protesters are being thrown in jail.

In Russia a yellow duck is meant to symbolize corruption.

I wonder if the NYT and liberals would be so tolerant and concerned about "free speech for the arts" if this was 2014 and the actor playing Julius Caesar was a black man being hanged?

Of course they wouldn't. There would be all sorts of racism and boycott calls. The left is always hypocritical of such things. But I still maintain that free speech should be tolerated even when - especially when - it is in poor taste. But I also support and encourage the free market system to correct speech that is in poor taste by withdrawing monetary support. A better option would have been not pledging support at all in the first place, this way you don't get involved.

AmEx is refusing to pull its funding, issuing a weasel-worded statement that its funding goes to the parent organization, not this particular production. That's not going to cut it, since the money is fungible and there are no limits on where it is used.

The analogy to Caesar is actually kind of clever. Liker Trump, he was beloved and admired by the people but brought down by evil establishment pols who resented him. However, that is not the point of this production. It is just another crude attempt to appeal to the sick blood lust of crazed liberals, who will be clapping their tiny hands silly at the thought of Trump being brutally murdered.

After all the Shakespear controversy, the Easter Pageant was concerned that seeing Trump on a cross could be problematic, so the Trump character will now play the part of Judas. And Jesus will be played by a Clinton look alike.
