I used to trade company shares - stocks and I reguarly trade the S&P. But never short.

If it's in the uptrend, go look at the lower time frames as 1 minute and look for the bullish structure to change to bearish I.e from higher highs and lower lows to lower highs to lower lows, if you see the bearish structure forming and see a low volume then it's time to go short and vice verse.

No averaging, just {pure} close vs close x nbr of bars ago.

But momo can decrease/increase while price does the opposite without a subsequent reversal. So sumtim yes, sumtim no.
