moderating your own journal

Would it be possible for people to have the right to moderate their own journal here on ET? I'm only talking about things posted in the journals thread.

To me a journal is kind of a personal thing. You may want to put it on a public message board to get feedback or prove a point, or whatever. But still it's yours and it would be nice if you could have control over what went into it without relying on an independant moderator who might edit or delete stuff that you want to stay. You'd still have to post within ET's guidelines.

I'd agree and expand this to allow members (maybe even limit it to senior or higher members) the ability to create a moderated thread that can be moderated by the thread creator, and of course the forum moderator as well. This would go a long way toward allowing individuals to present their views in an easier to follow manner without all the naysayers taking over and ruining decent threads before they have a chance to run their course. I haven't had this problem myself but I've seen excellent threads that have gone off the track and over the cliff as a firestorm of naysayers hits.

While I agree with the concerns stated, I think that moderating your own journal defeats the purpose. It is supposed to be an open forum.

Already I have had some sophmoric and childish comments placed in my journal by others and they were immediately deleted by the moderator.

If you are deterred by the possibility of a loudmouth imperializing your prospective journal, I suggest you PM magna and ask him what his style and standards are. Explain to him what kind of journal you are interested in doing, what kinds of feedback and/or interference you wish to avoid and see if he is willing to work with you on the basis that you would like to proceed. He has been very amenable to the concerns of journal keepers.

I'm going to have to agree with TriPack. A journal is just what it says it is -- someone's open notebook to the rest of the world concerning accounts of their trading. Since it is their journal, they should have the right to self-moderate their own journal and keep people out who are only there to cause trouble.

I doubt anyone who takes the time to keep a nice journal updated is going to poorly moderate their own journal. If they spend the time to keep their journal updated, they should be given the tools to make their journal the best that it can be.

Whatever gave you the idea that a journal is supposed to be an open forum? The only reason it's an open forum now is because there is no provision for self-moderation.

As for moderators taking care of OT or abusive posts, those posts can sit there for hours, sometimes days. After that, why bother deleting them at all?

Because it is, that's why.

You want a closed journal, do it at home.

You could suggest that to all the people who are forever complaining about OT posts to their journals, but then you'd be right back where you started. What's the difference between a moderator editing the journal and the writer doing it himself?

Not much. Except honest and forceful criticism could be too easily deleted in a self moderated journal.

If you want to keep the journal and control the entries, why do it here? Isn't the point to write for your own record and invite the replies of others, whether you like it or not? This does not include rude posts of course.

Ask Baron if he can include a feature to allow self moderating journals. My guess is the software does not currently allow sub-moderators within a forum.

I don't think people are talking about deleting posts for no other reason than that they don't like them. But even if somebody wanted to delete a post he didn't like, so what? It's his journal, not a thread that is necessarily of interest to anybody else.

As for the software, as I pointed out earlier, no, it doesn't allow for members to moderate their own journals. But that doesn't mean it's a bad idea.
