Mitch says he will try to fill any Supreme Court opening in 2020

But it's longstanding policy that the Senate does not vote on a SCOTUS nomination in an election year! The Biden rule's gotta be in the constitution somewhere?

Mitch completely and totally being hypocritical, of course. He didn't feel this way when Obama was on his way out. Then he wanted to wait, of course.

I like it because it is in favor of my political leaning, and a new conservative justice would be great. But I have to be honest and point out the blatant hypocrisy.

I don't see the hypocrisy. He refused to let a lame duck dem president make a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court on his way out of office. Do you honestly think Schumer would have handled it any differently if the situation were reversed?

Thing is, I don't know if the rules are actually being trampled. I just think he's molding the rules to what he needs without regards to the morality. I would much prefer the morality and justice of it take precedence over what I want to happen, but I know it will not.

It is a similar situation to the executive powers declaration on the border. I think that is/was a bad move, even though I like the result it was going for. At some point we all - each and every one of us - needs to hold our political masters accountable for good sense, partnership and morality. Otherwise we'll tear each other apart over semantics until our opponents are all that remain on the battlefield.

No, but just because Schumer would do something doesn't mean I would like us to do the same thing. I don't live my life doing sleazy things simply because my neighbor does.

If a candidate is presented to the Senate, the candidate should be given consideration. Period and end of story. If that rule were followed all the time despite gimmicks and games, this shit would not happen.
 
If this situation were to happen, all rules will go out of the window. The moment Dems take Senate and WH, they will dilute the court with more Justices guaranteed. Hope Mitch realizes it. Not good for our country in any shape or form.
 
AAA has given the correct answer: Obama was lame duck, whereas Mitch is entitled to presume that his party's president will be re-elected even if it does not happen.

Now that AAA has given the correct answer, I will add to it by giving a politically incorrect answer: ie. don't even fucking talk to me about the morality of this or that or the various procedural civilities and expectations that should prevail AFTER WHAT WAS DONE TO KAVANAUGH. If Trump loses the election and a justice dies the next day, I would do everthing possible to ram another justice in in the last couple months even if Trump loses. I would extract the absolute total possible retribution for what they did to Kavanaugh. And dont anyone even bother to argue that it would set a precedent such that the dems will do this or that if they are in power. We know what the dems are going to do regardless. They will turn down no chance to knife either republicans or established processes or courtesies at anytime, anywhere so no one should be trying to earn protection.
 
The Biden rule isn't real. That's just an excuse that the senate uses to delay the nomination of a candidate they don't want. The only thing that really matters is what the senate can do, and what they will do.

It will be interesting to see what happens if Trump is re-elected, but Democrats gain the majority in the senate. Would they try to delay the nomination for years if an opening came up?
