Milton Friedman dies

Quote from zdreg:

obviously nearly every college in the US accepts some funds from the US goverment. there still is a distinction between a tax funded school which refers usually to a public university and a private university like the university of chicago.

In the late 50's there were strings on grants that broadly applied.

The Fall assembly required all faculty to orally and verbally say and sign a non-communist oath. This was all prefaced with the statement that if anyone did not sign it subjected to whole place to having funds withdrawn immediately.

I, as "Mickey Mouse", complied. There were a couple of other cartoon characters in our row. I guess it was all just to paper the situation but the sound in the auditorium was eiry.

I regard all the Laureates as important; their work represents such a sustained and deep personal effort on a given body of work. Friedman is a revered contributor who got the job done. A milestone in time.
