You guys get a little US centric here. Thats the trouble with being more than a few % of the worlds economy 
US markets tend to go up "overnight" if the asian markets and then the european markets go up during their days. If you trade the markets they are following (HSI, N225, ESTX50, DAX) then you wouldn't have a "movement with low volume" because the movement is generated in these indexes.
Similarly we get gaps on our markets when they follow your market up or down "overnight".
