Quote from AAAintheBeltway:
I suspect there is quite a lot of support in europe for the idea expressed in the opening post, namely that it would be a worthwhile trade to eliminate Israel as a country in exchange for peace. I have had plenty of issues over the years with the way the Israel tail wags the US dog, but the idea is nonsense. (Actually, it would be very much in the US' self-interest to have the nation of Israel emigrate here, but that is another issue.)
First of all, Israel has at least as much right to its land as the palestinians do. Of course there were outrages perpetrated against the palestinian inhabitants during the founding of Israel, but at some point, they have to accept reality. In any event, this is not about justice for palestinians now. It is just the tip of the anti-western muslim jihad. If we surrender Israel, it will just be the floor for further demands.
Does the violence in Iraq have anything to do with Israel? Would the insurgency stop overnight if Israel ceased to exist? Would Iran renounce nuclear weapons? Would the islamist insurgencies in indonesia, the Phillipines, India and afghanistan lay down their arms?
A more practical solution would be for Iran and Syria to cut off funding for hamas and hezbolla. For Syria to pull out of lebanon and let that country decide its own fate. Beirut used to be the jewel of the eastern Mediteranean. With peace it could reclaim that role.
